💻 Mozilla Rolls Out $35M Venture Funds (Full Story Here)
Firefox developer Mozilla has unveiled a new $35 million venture capital fund, Mozilla Ventures, that will initially focus on early-stage stary up internet companies that protect privacy, decentralize digital power and build more trustworthy AI.
Secure AI Labs, a patient data security startup; Hey Login, a password management solution; and Block Party, a social media safety app are some of the companies included in Mozilla Ventures portfolio.
📉 VR/AR Funding Continues to Fall
Funding to companies in the VR, augmented reality and virtual worlds categories has been dropping quarter over quarter since their peak in late 2021, primarily because venture investors appear to be growing increasingly sensitive regarding risks involving investing in said category.
Crunchbase data shows that investment was lower in 2019 and 2020 before rebounding in 2021. Now, this year, we’re down again. Since hitting over $2.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021, metaverse-related funding has fallen to around $760 million in the most recent full quarter. The third quarter was also lower than Q1 and Q2 of 2022.
The up-and-down nature of funding indicates that the concept of immersive digital technologies that draw us deeper into virtual worlds remains a compelling one. But investors are apparently only willing to lose so much in pursuit of that vision.
